Emma chooses Waro to measure the footprint of its product catalog

Find out what Carolin Scheller, Sustainable Development Manager at Emma - The Sleep Company, has to say about her experience.

Before Waro, we used to carry out LCAs with an external partner, but this was time-consuming, very costly and the results were not detailed enough. With Waro, we've gained in precision and efficiency.

Emma's feedback interview - The Sleep Company

What's your role at Emma's?

I'm in charge of sustainable development at Emma.

What are your goals and how does Waro help you achieve them?

Our ambition is to become "Net Zero" by 2030, which means reducing our carbon emissions. We have calculated our company's carbon footprint and found that around 90% of our emissions are directly related to products.

We chose Waro to help us reduce our carbon footprint at product level, identify hot spots, find new virgin materials for eco-design and understand emission factors to get better results!

Why did you choose Waro?

We needed more information about our products, and in particular about their carbon emissions. This was also a request from our management. Before Waro, we used to carry out LCAs with an external partner, but this was time-consuming, very costly and the results were not detailed enough. Ultimately, we could do it more thoroughly in-house, as we have more information on our products than someone from outside. So we decided to assess the footprint of our products ourselves, but we needed support to do so. Waro proved to be the perfect option!

What I really like about Waro is the modeling, which is easy and very visual. I can quickly see the stages in a product's life cycle, from production processes to raw materials. All I have to do is enter the data and the results are immediately available, not only for CO2 emissions but also for many other impact indicators such as water pollution, etc. It's worth mentioning that there are 2 comprehensive databases, Ecoinvent and ADEME's Base Empreinte, which is a great advantage!

Scenario modeling has also played an important role in the eco-design of our products. Sometimes, we simply ask ourselves what the impact would be if we changed something in the development of a product. Waro is perfect for quickly creating a new scenario and comparing the impact results with each other. We then have all the information we need to decide whether to make the changes in the new version of our product.

How do you use Waro on an everyday basis?

This year, we used Waro to estimate the product footprint of our entire catalog. We also used it to identify eco-design levers for our mattresses to reduce their impact.

We have also decided to introduce an environmental rating. After assessing the impact of our products with Waro, this rating enables us to easily identify which products need further improvement and which are already optimized.

How do you use Waro for communication?

I showed the communication available on Waro to our marketing teams and they really liked it!

It allows us to say that there is an external partner with whom we work on impact results, and that our calculations have external validation. In fact, Waro's calculations are carried out in accordance with ISO standards and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This compliance reinforces the confidence and credibility of the carbon footprint we communicate to our customers.

Have you already improved some of your products?

This year, we introduced a new development. Thanks to Waro, we know, for example, that steel is better than foam and has a lower carbon impact. We have therefore increased the use of steel and eliminated foam from our products. We'll continue to do this for all our other mattresses, and on this basis we'll further optimize weight reduction and so on.

Next year, we'll be looking at other product categories such as beds and accessories.

CSR Strategy

Thanks to Waro, we know our emissions at product level, and this data is very useful when compiling our CSR reports.
